Beauty | Pucker up with the right lipstick shade

Goth makeup may be big this season but not everyone can pull of the dark, bold lip colours. Selecting the right colour to match your skin tone is the only way to get that perfect shade, and pout.

Drastic red or gothic black may look striking on one person, but it may make another person look drawn or just frightening!

Choosing the right lipstick shade for your complexion may appear like a mammoth exercise but there are a few simple tricks to finding the perfect match.

Knowing your undertone is helpful when trying to figure out which lipstick looks best on you.

Everyone’s skin has undertones of either yellow or pink. Yellow is warmer, while pink is cooler. One quick test to know your undertone is to check the veins on your wrist. If they are blue, and you tend to gravitate towards wearing blues, whites, and greys, you have pink undertones.

If the veins are more green, you have a warmer yellow undertone. If your veins appear to be both blue and green, you have a neutral skin tone and can wear any colour.

You need to focus on shades that are similar to your undertones when choosing a lipstick. For yellow undertones, choose warmer colours and for pink undertones, look for shades with blue or purple tones in them.

Are there any lipsticks we should all avoid? Yes is the simple answer. As a general rule of thumb, most people should avoid ashy, grey or overly pale colours. These can often make the skin look sickly or unhealthy.

For our Irish pale skin, bold reds and deep colours tend to work well. For this skin type, you should avoid anything that is too light or with too much of a yellow undertone so you do not look washed out.

For those with olive skin tones, nudes, pink, orange, and red shades all work well.

Always take into consideration the outfit you are wearing when selecting a colour. For an outfit with warmer colours, stick to warmer, bright colours.
