Beauty | Shine up your hair with mayo and mustard

Lathering your hair in mayonnaise and avocado does not sound and look too appealing, but such natural foods can add a shine that no expensive bottle can achieve.

Home and traditional remedies, as we all know, tend to have more of the desired effect than we hope from processed and packaged products. And while they are not the most glamorous or luxurious of treatments, they are certainly the more affordable and easier options than spending hours of your time and cash in a salon.

Mayonnaise is the most common food to add to hair, especially for those with dry or damaged locks. Mayo contains amino acids and antioxidants that strengthens your hair and gives a beautiful shine.

Wet your hair with warm water and lather your hair with the mayonnaise. The amount added depends on the length and thickness of your hair.

Wrap your hair with a shower cap or plastic wrap to trap the heat inside. Let it sit for at least 20 minutes, and then wash it out using a diluted shampoo.

Beer is another favourite as its hops contain silica which can strengthen and add a super shine to your hair. After washing your hair with shampoo, pour the beer over your wet hair. Massage the beer into your scalp for a few minutes, then rinse and condition.

The caffeine content in black tea is said to decrease the hormone that is associated with hair loss, while it also gives your hair extra shine.

Add tea bags to two cups of boiled water, and let it steep for a few hours. Pour onto your hair after it has been washed, and let it sit for up to 30 minutes.

Avocados are not only a great superfood but they also contain a lot of good fats that hydrate and nourish your hair and scalp. Mix the avocado and olive oil in a bowl and apply to damp hair. Apply to hair, including the scalp and hair ends. Rinse off after 20 minutes and shampoo as normal.

Who knew our unwanted food was so beneficial?
