The low down on serums

We’ve lasted years without ever owning a serum but they’ve been having a moment for a while now and it doesn’t look like they’re going anywhere anytime soon.

In fact, some skin specialists say a serum is one of the most important products in our skin care kit. Open any magazine or read any beauty blog and chances are there will be some information there on the latest and greatest serum to hit a beauty counter near you.

But if you’ve yet to invest in one, then it’s hard to understand why we need them and how to get the best out of them. So, to find out more, award winning trainer and skin therapist, Jennifer Rock – aka the Skin Nerd – tells us the who, what and where of serums and why we really do need one in our beauty bags and asap.

Why do we need a serum?

“Many people crave the thick sensation of a hydrating cream on the surface of the skin,” says Jennifer. “But however nourished the skin may feel, these heavy creams often act as hindrance for visible results, as they act as a barrier, locking out the key ingredients and their ability to penetrate into the lower living layers.”

And what are the benefits?

“The unique point of a serum is that it omits most of the unnecessary fluids, allowing the products to remain lightweight with a high percentage of active ingredients: Vitamin A, C, antioxidants, acids, lightening ingredients, hyaluronic acid, peptides and various other renowned skin ingredients that are amongst the most popular used to promote flawless skin.”

And flawless skin we do want. So while they aren’t designed to replace your moisturiser, they boost the skincare routine we already have in place. So how do we apply?

“Serums are ideally applied under a moisturiser and before SPF/makeup application, if applicable.” And while they might cost a pretty penny, Jennifer insists they are definitely worth having as part of our everyday routines.

“Due to their effectiveness they tend to be the most costly step in a basic regime but truly worth the investment, as only a small amount is needed upon application due to their potency.
