How to know if it’s the right time to find a new job

Whether you’re unhappy in your current job, want to find something completely different, or love the job you are in and are just ready for a new challenge, it’s hard to know when the right time is for leaving a job.

And the truth is, there is no right time to change career, but there’s no wrong time either – if you are no longer happy in your role, if you feel like you aren’t being challenged enough or if the job simply doesn’t suit your lifestyle anymore, then it’s a sign that you need to start looking elsewhere.

There are a lot of things to consider when deciding when and why to move on from your job. Here are 5 ways to decide if you’re ready to find a new job.

Decide what you would like to see happen in your five year plan. Do you see yourself in a completely different field? Or do you see yourself still in the job you currently have? Do you see yourself retired or working shorter time frames? If the job your dream about seeing yourself in is not currently reflected somewhat in your current job, remember that it’s never too late to make a drastic career change. But now is the time to think about doing it.

Think about your present job, if you have one. What is it about the job you don’t enjoy? What do your feel is missing? What’s the ideal situation for you eventually?

Talk to your family and friends. Making a big decision such as a complete career charge can be difficult and emotional to make. Discuss the potential decision  with friends, family or a professional career change expert and write them down.

Ask yourself the hard questions. What are the reasons you are leaving your current job? It could be that you’re just ready, but if you want to make a list just for yourself, it’s beneficial to create a pros and cons list before showing it to anyone.

You will also need to think about the timing too. Perhaps you want different things from your job despite having worked there for years (and it suited you while you were there) but now life could be different and the hours and timings need to fit in to your lifestyle of today.
