Behind the scenes
Want to know how we created the look for our cover star Lucy Kennedy? Read on for the deets behind the scenes
What goes on at a photo shoot with Lucy Kennedy? First up, ya gotta feed the talent so coffee and carbs from Starbucks –scones/danishes/skinny muffins (delish apparently, I went for the full fat version). Then, in between all the gossiping (my lips are sealed!) there was much ooh-ing and aahh-ing over the Stella and Dot accessories which stylist Roxanne kept pulling from her bag, like a Mary Poppins with a crystal fetish. Shoes were lined up, dresses were hung. It was Rainbow Brite’s fantasy and we loved it.
The dream team of Michelle Kinsella and Kevin Heaven were on make-up and hair respectively, here’s how they created the look:
Face up
Michelle: “Lucy has really good skin, a little bit uneven but I think we all have that. We prepped the skin with Charlotte Tilbury Magic Cream, it’s a moisturiser with hyaluronic acid which instantly plumps, and it’s rich but not greasy so it doesn’t affect the make-up.
I used the HD Liquid Foundation from Buff Make-up, it photographs really well and you can build it up.
I used the db face concealer – the one with the three colours, it’s my favourite and it’s great if you’ve got uneven skin tone. The pink is great for any dark circles under the eyes, any grey or blue-y tones. The yellow is great for any redness in the skin, any blemishes or spots, the lash line or eyelid can be red if you’re tired. The darker colour can be used over the other two for colour.
I set all that with Charlotte Tilbury Air Brush Flawless Finish pressed powder which is different to other powders I’ve used in that it has oils and it’s not drying or chalky. You don’t need a lot of it, just enough to take the shine down.
On the eyes I used a mixture of the M.A.C warm and cool neutral palettes, they’re new and I love them. I used a mixture of shadows, brown with a little plum. We didn’t do anything too heavy, a little bit smudged underneath. The Inglot gel liner no 77 is brilliant – it’s really, really black and very long wearing.
For lips we used a berry colour, it’s called Tea Rose from dbface, it’s like a berry light lip stain, and a bit of gloss over it. Anything paler than that would look strange against her dark skin.

Hair heaven
“Lucy has amazing hair, a lot of fine hair so getting that little bit of volume is a little bit tougher. She has some extensions so we wanted to create a look with more volume. We use label. m Volume Mousse at the roots and through the crown area. We used label. m Texturising Volume Spray in brunette to finish off the look.”
What products should Lucy use at home?
“Obviously Lucy would have to use the Great Lengths shampoo and conditioner but the Bain Volumifique from the Kérastase range and a moisturising conditioner, but nothing too heavy.”
