As we were all braving the elements during Christmas, celebrities were lapping up the sun in exotic places.

The airport in Barbados has been hectic in recent weeks thanks to a massive influx of celebrities wanting to enjoy their Christmas and New Year with some sun and Caribbean celebrations.

Simon Cowell and his family party are regulars on the island that is a traditional mecca for British tourists. Joined by his famous ex Sinitta and Union J, the party tend to stay at the five-star, Irish-owned Sandy Lane resort in Saint James.

Sports star Gary Lineker, Topshop boss Sir Philip Green and actor Mark Wahlberg were also spotted at the luxury hotspot during the New Year. Of course, Bajan native Rihanna also returned home at Christmas to soak up the festive spirit.

To get to Barbados from Ireland, stopovers are required in either London or Toronto.

St Barts is another celebrity haunt, and one that is favoured by Pippa Middleton and her clan. Heidi Klum chose the small island to ring in 2016, while Lana Del Rey was also there. The main attraction to the island is its access difficulty, meaning it has never been overrun by tourists.

A little easier to get to for us mere mortals is Miami. From presenter Caroline Flack to LeAnn Rimes, party lovers tend to flock to the city for its epic nightlife and glorious weather.

Dubai is a favourite of both Irish and international celebrities including Kim Kardashian and the Beckhams. With year-round summer weather and high-end luxury accommodation and facilities, it is not surprising why it is also a favourite destination for honeymooners.

Closer to home, the French Riviera has long attracted celebrities such as Johnny Depp, Cate Blanchett and Jennifer Lopez. For a bit of celebrity spotting, head to St Tropez, a millionaire’s playground with luxurious yachts right on the port.
