Wellbeing: Three ways to… Soothe tired feet

When it comes to our bodies, there is no harder working part than our feet.

On a daily basis, our feet are subject to a variety of wear and tear. So what can you do to soothe aching and tired tootsies? There good news is that there are some easy ways to relieve the sensation of tired feet and you can practice them in the comfort of your own home.

  • Elevate your feet – Sit or lie down in a comfortable position and use a pillow to elevate your feet. This will help to improve circulating and give your feet a much needed rest. Elevate your feet for about 15 to 20 minutes. Or, if you want to take this a step further (no pun intended) try placing your legs up against the wall for an even deeper sense of relaxation. Make sure you pop a pillow under your head and be careful not to strain yourself. Legs up against the wall is a popular yoga pose and is a great one to do right before bed to help you unwind.
  • Massage your feet – If you can’t rope someone in to giving you a foot massage, try doing it yourself. Get some foot cream or oil and slowly massage your feet. This will help to get circulation moving and can help to reduce any swelling you may be experiencing. Keep the pressure firm but not too hard and carefully work your way around your foot, paying close attention to your soles.
  • Soak your feet – Soak away any aches and pains by adding a handful of Epsom salts to a basin of warm water. Soak your feet for 15-20 minutes. The warm water will help to soothe while the Epsom salts will help to draw out any toxins and reduce swelling. Make sure you keep a towel nearby so you can dry off without having to trek water through your house.
