Family | How busy mothers can de-stress

The job of a mother never ends, and it can feel almost impossible to take a few minutes to de-stress and recharge the batteries. There is some light at the end of the tunnel though.

With a house full of noise and a lengthy to-do list, getting the time to relax and rejuvenate can seem impossible. But it need not be, according to the experts. Here are some of the tried and tested methods that may help you get on track.

Rise early. Try to wake at least 15 minutes earlier before the rest of those in the house. Do a few yoga stretches, take a few breaths in bed or simply retreat to the kitchen and have a coffee in the calm.

Noise levels in houses increase thanks to everyone watching televisions, using tablets or being on the phone. When you are feeling overloaded, turn down the background noise by unplugging some of the electronics and gadgets.

If you are tired and do not feel like making a big dinner but feel you have to, be realistic and mindful. Create something easy that is nutritious but does not involve a lot of hard work and attention.

We often get stressed when things do not go according to our well-set plans. This can be anything from not eating at a certain time, getting homework done or failing to get the kids to be bed as scheduled. Learn to live in the present and realise that you can only manage what happens at that moment in time. Many parents get stressed when they compare what they do with other families; use that energy to focus on your own family’s requirements.

Instead of running around looking after the every need of your family, take a few minutes to actually sit down and spend some time with your family. This interaction and laughter will instantly de-stress you and make you realize what is important in life.

Unfortunately, a parent’s daily to-do list never ends. Instead of adding yet another task to that schedule, mark in a 15-minute break and make this a priority. This moment of reflection will help you fulfil some of the other tasks on that list. Be realistic of what you can also achieve in those few short hours.

If the opportunity arises, spend your few minutes of relaxation outside. The natural elements will help you relax easier.

And remember, just breathe!
