Fashion | Key trends from New York Fashion Week

With the front row politics and celebrities trying to compete for the most glam title, it is easy to forget that New York Fashion Week is about setting the trends for the next season. So, what will we have in our wardrobes later this year?

From Blake Lively refusing to uncross her legs in the front row to Victoria Beckham sporting a casual look (yes, Victoria can do casual), the stories and images beaming from New York were more focused on the celebrities than the designers and their clothes.

And while it is a great side show and snapshot into how the glamorous live, the big business is on the catwalk.

It is back to black and white ensembles for some designers, with Rihanna leading the charge with her new Fenty Puma range.

Cushnie Et Ochs also featured this look as well, sporting a delicate white top and bottom with black gloves.

Next season, it’s all about prints. And more prints. A bright leopard coat and a pink dotted dress? Jeremy Scott’s style may be eccentric but it is the future. Retro inspired prints also featured heavily.

Textured pieces also featured heavily on the catwalk. Think big and beautiful – dresses with ruffled sleeves and layered tulle gowns.

As for accessories, the key look is small but colourful. Models swayed down the catwalk with small but colourful clutch purses, for example.

Faced with sub zero temperatures in New York, many stars wore their trusty fur coat to brave the elements. Luckily for them and us, fur remains a key look next season with stoles and dramatic full length pieces all featuring in the shows.
