Food | Can you really eat healthily when dining out?
Whether it’s a night out with the girls or a take-away on a Saturday night, we all love to treat ourselves when dining out, or in. But it’s not an easy task when you are trying to maintain a healthy diet. Or is it?
Temptation is everywhere, especially if you are trying to be good. That is why many both love and hate dining out. Should you just sacrifice one night and indulge in all of those lovely creamy sauces and breads? Or should you keep on track and stay within your set food plan?
It depends on the night, and the occasion. Sometimes in life, we just need to let go and enjoy the present moment. On other nights, however, you may need to just be strict. But that does not mean it has to be torture.
In a bid to really enjoy the food, many of us tend to eat little or nothing during the day. That is the biggest mistake. Our hungry eyes and stomach will encourage you to gorge on the breads or opt for something more filling, like burgers or extra steaks. Eat some fruit or crackers to starve off the hunger before you go out.
Be prepared. Look up the menu before you go out, thus allowing you to make an informed decision when you are there.
For Chinese options, it is best to stick with stir-fried vegetable dishes, bean sauces and clear broths. Avoid the prawn crackers, egg-fried rice and don’t add salt to your food.
For Indian restaurants, tomato and yogurt-based curries are the best options. Tandoori and vegetarian dishes are also on the good side of the menu. Avoid the deep-fried snacks while lamb dishes can be quite fatty.
Italian dishes can also be quite easy when you know what to order. For pasta, marinara and tomato based sauces are good with chicken and fish good ‘meat’ options. For pizza, load it up with vegetables and opt for chicken or seafood for a healthier variety.
Finally, if you are having a few alcoholic drinks with your meal, make sure to drink plenty of water to stay hydrated.
