Food and exercise go hand in hand. However, there are some foods that can help your workout a little easier.

We have all done it. We work up a sweat exercising then gorge on something naughty, justifying the treat by calculating the amount of calories burned off earlier.

Instead of focusing on the foods that we can eat after our workout, the experts say we should look to include foods that can enhance our exercising routine.

Fruit should be the first item on your list. Bananas and apples, for instance, are loaded with vitamin C, antioxidants and fibre, all of which gives you a natural boost of energy before your workout. Citrus fruit, on the other hand, can be hard to digest and may hinder your exercise by causing stomach cramps.

If you are looking to pump your protein before your workout, greek yogurt is a good option as it is also full with carbohydrates. This mix is also great for muscle growth.

When you are looking for a small snack before your workout, consider grabbing a bowl of bran cereal. Its high in fibre and the betaine chemical which can enhance your physical performance and boost your metabolic rate.

Oatmeal is another good option as it provides glucose to fuel your muscles. Oatmeal pancakes are a great dish to have three hours before you exercise, especially when you add the aforementioned fruit.

After your hard work, your body craves the nutrients it has lost. Your body also needs to replenish and rebuild your depleted muscles. Eating proteins such as chicken, eggs or fish provides your muscles with the amino acids that help them to grow back stronger and bigger.

If you are still craving a nibble, munch on trail mix. A well prepared trail mix should include all the nutrients that are essential for maintaining optimum energy, while are also high in protein.
