If you were not eating sipping green smoothies with kale or adding avocado to your salads in the last year, you are one of the few.
Food fads are nothing new but thanks to everyone posting their daily dishes on their newsfeeds and lifestyle gurus telling us what to eat, we are more in tune with the latest food trends than ever before.
Clean eating is a trend that will continue through to 2016 with a twist on a few classics. Smoothies were once again a big hit in 2015 with everyone eager to pack in their five a day. However, the big trend next year will be the smoothie bowl. Packed with your favourite frozen fruits and vegetables, proteins and healthy fats, think of this bowl as more of a frozen dessert. You can also decorate the bowls with key ingredients such as berries, granola, nuts and muesli and quinoa.
While pulled pork was the on-trend food in 2015, fried chicken will be seen on a lot of menus next year. Yes, it has been around for a long times but chefs across the globe are trying to rekindle consumer interest in this perceived dirty food with a new twist.
Old meets New
Do you remember that sweet candy floss that used to stick to your hands and hair? Well, it’s back with a bang in 2016. Added to everything from cocktail mixes to cakes, you can expect to see candy floss in many adult desserts over the next 12 months.
Porridge was the ultimate breakfast dish this year with overnight oats and addition of fruit and seeds helping to raise its nutritional value. During 2016, you can expect to see porridge incorporated into lunch and dinner. Chefs are cooking the grains in broth and adding everything from meats, vegetables, garnishes and creams for flavour. Think of it as the new risotto.
Finally, coconut water was the beverage of choice in 2015 but plant waters are taking over. Cactus, birch, maple and artichoke waters are set to take the food world by storm thanks to their unique health food world by storm.
