Anxiety can come in waves when under stress, or for some it’s a regular battle. There is no magic button to turn off anxiety but we can learn to deal with it better.

Issues at work, stress at home or just having to deal with the day-to-day stuff can all be triggers to feelings of overwhelming anxiety. If not managed right, it can really impact your overall wellbeing, health and daily life.

As such, learning how to deal with it is imperative. First, you need to find out what is triggering those anxious feelings. Write a journal when you are feeling stressed or anxious, and look for a pattern. Once you have discovered what the problem is, look at ways to rectifying those triggers.

Limiting your alcohol and caffeine may help as these can aggravate anxiety, and in some cases, trigger panic attacks.
We often get anxious when we are not in control of a situation, or feel as if everything is a failure if not perfect. Instead of striving for perfection, which is often not possible, try and be proud of what you have achieved so far.

Break projects into small components and aim to complete one at a time. Also try to learn and accept that you cannot control everything. Put your stress in perspective. Is it really as bad as you think? Try and maintain a more positive attitude. Make an effort to replace your negative thoughts with positive ones.

Take up a hobby or activity that will occupy your mind, and allows you the opportunity to be exposed to a positive and engaging experience. Volunteering can be a very fulfilling, for example.

Exercise is a great way to feel good and maintain your health. Complement this with a relaxing practice and try some breathing techniques, such as yoga or meditating. Stepping back from the problems with such activities can help you manage your anxiety levels. When you are anxious, your body needs additional sleep and rest.

If your feelings of anxiety overwhelm you, it is best to talk to someone. This could be a family member or to a counsellor for a professional help.
