Lifestyle | Is it time to build your personal brand?

Do you see yourself as a personal brand? Even if you don’t, you already have one thanks to your digital footprint. Maximising that presence and brand can do wonders for your career.

The big brands – Coke, Diageo, Tayto – may be the leaders in branding but they are not the only players.

An increasing number of people are focusing on maximising their own personal brand to advance in their career, and other parts of their life.

To get started, ask yourself what you wish for people to associate with you when they think of your name. Is there an area of expertise or field that you want linked to your brand. Once you know, you can start to be more strategic about your own brand.

The first strategic step is to audit your online presence. Google yourself and set up alerts for your name on a regular basis. Ensure that all information is correct and beneficial to you.

Having a personal website for yourself is one of the best ways to rank your name on search engines. All you need to add is basic information, links to your social platforms and a brief bio.

Find ways to add value to your audience by creating or curating content that is in line with your brand.

Be mindful and purposeful in what you post. Every tweet you send, status you update, picture you share contributes to your personal brand. You do not want to share anything that may have a negative impact on your brand.

Associate yourself with strong brands. This can be anything from the college you attended to professional colleagues that have a lot of kudos in your industry. Are there any LinkedIn groups you can join? Look at all opportunities that may help your brand.

Think like a brand, and act like one.
