Social | First date dilemmas…where to go and what to do

The dating scene can be extremely daunting. You want the first date to go well, but where should you go or what should you do?

The first date can make or break a potential relationship, and your enthusiasm and motivation to embrace the whole dating scene. That is why it is so important to select the right activity, or the right place to go on that nerve-wrecking and exciting first date.

Try and get an idea of what your date wants. If you know your date is more the outdoors type, perhaps a hike or walk is a good option. When you are both in a comfortable and familiar environment, you will be more relaxed and get to know each other better. If they mentioned that they do not like fancy restaurants, for example, it is not a good idea to pick a Michelin star eatery or even fancy cafe.

If you fear the danger of awkward silences during a meal, try selecting a location where there are other objects of interest. The zoo or museum, for instance, offers plenty of distractions and topics for conversation.

Going out for a drink is not everyone’s idea of a good date, especially for non-drinkers. Instead, choose a cafe that has comfortable seating and a quiet corner that you can retreat too. A noisy space with giggly teenagers in the corner will not help if you are feeling self-conscious and awkward.

If you are opting for a meal, always ask your date their food preferences. You may love the carnivore offering at your favourite restaurant, but your veggie loving date may be somewhat distraught when faced with slabs of red meat!

Here are some alternative first date ideas:

  • Take a fitness class
  • Volunteer at a soup kitchen
  • Play video games
  • Take a cooking class together
  • Visit a tourist spot in your area
  • Rent bikes
  • Bowling
  • Bingo
  • Wine tasting evening
