Travel | Mistakes we make when travelling

Travelling is all fun and frolics until something bad happens. Taking key preventative measures is essential to having a safe and enjoyable holiday.

Getting sick while travelling abroad is our greatest fear. After forking out so much money and time on the getaway, spending it in your hotel room or in a hospital can be a nightmare.

While there are some incidents that we cannot avoid, we can take some preventative measures to avoid various sicknesses.

Depending on where you are going, you may need to get vaccination shots. Mosquito bites, for example, can bring on malaria in many cases while some people are allergic to the little insects.

A hand sanitiser is your best friend while on holiday. As we like to explore new and exciting things on holidays, we are prone to spreading germs across key areas like our nose, mouth and eyes. You won’t always have access to soap and water so always have a hand sanitiser in your bag.

Drinking water is obviously important to staying hydrated while abroad. Drinking tap water while abroad is not advisable and so you should stock up on bottled water wherever you go and avoid having ice in your drinks.

The idea of walking barefoot in a beach town is magestic but can be detrimental to your health. Always wear shoes or flip-flops to avoid picking up any nasty diseases on the beach or on the streets.

Whether it’s a small cut or something a little more serious, you may need a first aid kit for all those emergencies. You can get a small pack with all the essentials in any good chemist or at the airport shops.

Sometimes, when travelling, the local food may not agree with you. Always bring something familiar with you from home to eat like granola bars, health bars or any products that are healthy and provides you with the nutrition you require.
