Travel | Things to do in Galway
With thousands of people descending upon Galway this week for the festival and races, we take a snapshot of some the best things to do and see in the county.
There is something about Galway that everyone seems to love about the western county. The harbour city is known for its eclectic arts scene, traditional pubs and hearty food. But there is more to the city of Tribes than just that.
The compact walled city makes it easy to walk around, allowing you the time to wander around the historic and lively streets, such as Quay Street and Shop Street. The Latin Quarter and historic Spanish Arch is another nice part of the city to stroll around.
No visit to this corner of Galway city is complete without a trip to the famous and award winning McDonagh’s fish and chip restaurant. Also on this route is the famed McCambridges shop and cafe, a heaven for food lovers.
Galway’s Cathedral is one of the city’s finest architectural buildings, while Eyre Square, located in the centre of the city, is a great place to have a picnic and people watch.
A short journey from the city is Salthill, with great entertainment and activities for children including the aquarium and amusement rides.
To really embrace true Irish heritage and amazing landscape, a trip to Connemara is a must.
Leenane is the place to be for sporting enthusiasts, or indeed just families that want a range of activities. From turf challenges to giant swing and bungee jump, there is something for all their dedicated adventure center. You can also get a boat trip around Connemara to leisurely savour the scenery.
Walking enthusiasts love the ruggedness of Connemara National Park, while a trip across the atlantic to the Aran Islands is another great day-trip from Galway. It is there, on Inismor, where you can see the famous fort of Dun Aengus.
Finally, a visit to Kylemore Abbey is another tourist attraction you should add to your vast list!
