As we endure yet another storm, many of us are planning a getaway to sunnier climes. So, when is the best time to book that long-awaited holiday?

Cheap holidays, Is there really such a thing anymore? Or are we simply not savvy enough when it comes to booking a holiday?

It’s a bit of both. With more people willing to spend a little extra on getting away, many resorts are booking up quickly with this naturally pushing up prices.

There is also a science to booking a getaway, according to Skyscanner, the online search engine portal for travel.

To get the best deals, a general rule of thumb is to book seven weeks in advance of flying. However, it all depends on your chosen destination. For a trip to Paris, it is ideal to stick to this minimum of seven weeks.

For a trip to New York from Ireland, they say the best deals can be had 17 weeks in advance.  If you are planning a trip to Barcelona, you better book nine weeks before you travel.

The price also depends on time of the year. November is the cheapest month to travel from Ireland, with consumers able to get savings of up to 14% against the price of flights. The summer holiday months of July is by far the most expensive month to travel in, as is August.

Cheapair.com also revealed their fare search statistics recently. According to their analysis, they say that 47 days is the optimum average advance booking period.

While destination and time of year are the main factors, there are others that can have a direct impact on price. Fuel prices, weather, exchange rates and terrorist attacks all play their part in dictating prices.
