A city break to one of the many European cities on our doorstep is one of the best ways to break up the monotonous winter days. We look at some of the best places to visit this winter.

Winter city breaks are back in fashion, thanks to increasing flights to European cities and some great offers currently available. With so many beautiful cities within short flying time, a weekend getaway is one of the most affordable and adventurous escapes for you, or with all of the family.

But where to go this winter?

Barcelona, Paris and London always remain in fashion but there are many more cities to explore. Rome, for example, is ideal at this time of year, temperature wise. There are also less tourists so reduced waiting times to enter the Vatican and other attractions. The hop-on hop-off bus tour is also very worthwhile in this charming city.

Reykjavik in Iceland has become another hotspot amongst Irish travellers. While an expensive region, the city and its environs are unique and breathtaking. With a chance to see the Northern Lights, you can enjoy the beauty of the Blue Lagoon, geysers and amazing landscape.

For some romance, Venice is a great alternative to Paris. The city’s architecture, food, and, of course, opportunity to travel around on a gondola adds to the overall experience. Another option is Vienna, with the opera and cafe society two of the many key features that attract tourists. There is also a great Christmas market in the city.

For food lovers, San Sebastian is a must. The city is home to three of Spain’s seven 3-star Michelin restaurants. For those on a budget, the region is littered with tapas restaurants with the quality of food outstanding.

For those that live and breathe fashion, Milan and Amsterdam should be on the hit-list. Fashionistas will love the designer brands available, while the city has a number of outlets to suit all budgets. The Nine Streets area in Amsterdam is a shopper’s heaven while the area also has plenty of bars, cafes and restaurants.
