Well Being | Are you emotionally intelligent?

Forget your first class honours degree or years of experience. Today, more employers are looking for those with a high level of emotional intelligence.

Of course, having a first class honours and years of experience does matter. But in fast paced and stress related position, employers are looking for something more. And that X factor is emotional intelligence.

Years of research now point to emotional intelligence as being the critical factor that sets star performers apart from the rest of the pack. Essentially, it affects how we manage behaviour, navigate social complexities, and make personal decisions to achieve positive results.

There are many signs that may indicate you are emotionally intelligent. For example, such people are flexible and are constantly adapting. While they know that fear of change is a major threat to their success and happiness, they are willing to take that chance.

They know their strengths and weaknesses. They know what they are good at and what they are bad at. They know who pushes their buttons and the environments that enable them to succeed.

They are socially aware and so can read other people, know what they are about, and understand what they are going through. This, in time, makes you a great judge of character.

They let go of mistakes, but do so without forgetting them. Instead of focusing on their negative impact, they use them to adapt and adjust for future success.

They don’t hold grudges as they know such an action is stressful. Emotionally intelligent people avoid stressful situations at all costs and know that letting go makes them feel better.

Are you difficult to offend? This is a sure sign you are emotionally intelligent. You are confident and open minded, meaning you have a pretty thick skin.

So, are you emotionally intelligent?
