The stars of How To Be Single tell Woman’s Way why it’s OK to be a single lady

Dakota Johnson, Rebel Wilson, Leslie Mann and Alison Brie play independent women in this Bridesmaids-type comedy that even men won’t be able to avoid laughing through. But at the centre of this comedy lies a more serious message of girl power, and why us ladies should be encouraging each other toward greatness instead of knocking each other down.

Following Johnson’s role in Fifty Shades of Grey, and Wilson’s role in Pitch Perfect 2, the three gal pals embark on exploring the definition of love in the Big Apple in How To Be Single.

At the heart of the comedy is friendship and girl power, so what do these costars make of their onscreen camaraderie?

“I think it means everything is so important. I can’t imagine not having it, you can see it on the screen,” says Mann, who plays the character of Meg in the movie.

“That energy is what, I think, makes all movies special. It’s like this undercurrent of the relationship that you can feel between people working together,” adds Johnson, who adds that she embraced the role of Alice.

“The moments where you see Alice is just frustrated with herself, that’s something that I can definitely relate to. The thing that I appreciated is that it’s a depiction of a girl who has really depended on a lot of people her whole life to make her feel better or to help her out with things and sort of hold her hand and guide her through certain situations that are scary or difficult. Then she had a boyfriend or she had Meg. So it was never needing to step up and do something herself. She could always sort of cop out. I think that’s a real thing. I knew a lot of people like that when I was young [laughs].”

While the stars are all about girl power and the message of the movie tells amen everywhere it’s perfectly ok to be a single woman, Mann cheekily says husbands can come in handy sometimes.

“Well, we went to a screening at a movie theater and there was a woman who was working there. I think she was around forty, and she said, ‘I’m so excited. Now I feel like it’s okay to be single. I feel relieved.’ She was just happy to that it it’s telling you it’s okay. And it should be. Obviously it’s okay, but we’ve just been brainwashed to believe that we have to get married and have kids and do things a certain way. And you don’t have to. You’re fine.

The only thing I can say, though, is that I have kids, and when they were little, they would wake up in the middle of the night or whatever, and just taking care of my kids I was so happy to have my husband there. They really are good at times; they’re useful!”

One of the messages young women may take from How To Be Single is that it’s definitely not a bad thing to go it alone. Any woman can conquer anything in life without being in a relationship, so what do Dakota Johnson and Leslie Mann have to say about their roles in shifting expectations for women?

“Well, I’m raising two girls right now,” says Mann.

“I’m excited for them and I’m excited that they get to grow up in the world the way it is now, as opposed to when I was younger or when my mother was. I love the message at the end of the movie and I’m excited for them to see it. If it’s a movement, let’s call it a movement. Let’s make it a big deal.”

“Yeah,” Dakota cheers in full support of the How To Be Single ‘movement’.
