Here’s what we know about the new US First Lady

As Michelle Obama and her husband bow out gracefully from the Whitehouse, all eyes will be on the Trump first family when they move in in the New Year.

So, what do we know about the new First Lady, Melania Trump?

1. She’s the second first lady to not have been born on US soil

Melania (46) is originally from Slovenia. Born into a then communist Yugoslavia, Melania’s father Viktor Knavs was a car dealer and a member of the Slovenian Communist Party. The first First Lady to have been born outside of the US was Louisa Adams, wife of President John Quincy Adams. She was English, born to the American Consul in London and was first lady from 1825 to 1829.

2. Melania is a former model 

Mrs Trump began her modelling career at the age of 16. At 18 she joined a Milan based model agency before moving to New York in 1996. She appeared on the cover of Harpers Bazaar, Ocean Drive, In Style Weddings, New York Magazine, Vogue and GQ. She also posed for Sports Illustrated swimsuit issue in 2000. In 2001 she was given a green card. She became a US citizen following her marriage to Donald Trump.

3. She is Donald Trump’s third wife

The billionaire married Melania in 2005, after divorcing second wife Marla Marples in 1999, whom he married following his 1992 divorce from Ivana Trump. Melania gave birth to the couple’s only child, Barron, in 2006. Melania is said to have called her son a ‘mini Donald,’ as he apparently loves to don a suit and tie like his businessman father.

4. She is quite the linguist

Melania Trump speaks five languages, Slovenian, Serbian, English, French and German.
