Money | What to know when switching energy providers
We all love to save money, but we tend to ignore the opportunity when we believe there is some work involved. With possible annual savings of up to €300, consumers should consider switching energy providers.
Energy bills have been increasing dramatically in recent years, with the average household now paying €2,204 per year. Simply switching and shopping around could save you €300, according to the experts.
Despite what many people may think, switching providers is quite easy. There is no interruption to your supply and no-one needs to visit your home.
Most of the providers also offer discounted tariffs if you pay by direct debit and use online billing instead of paper. Another stipulation for such low-cost offerings is that you have to sign for a 12-month contract, but after that period the discounts usually expire and you are free to switch again.
To find the best deals available today, use an accredited gas and electricity comparison service like bonkers.ie or switcher.ie.
How to switch utilities:
1. You need your MPRN number for switching electric source, which you can find on the first page of your electricity bill. For gas supply, you need your GPRN number, which can also be found on your bill.
2. You will need to provide meter readings when you switch. You can take this number from your actual meter, or take the reading from your last bill.
3. You will need all of your billing information, such as your direct debit details.
