The app that will help you sleep better

We’ve heard it all before – the general sleep expectancy rule is between 7 and 8 hours of sleep a night. But with late night work, Netflix binges and early starts, ensuring you get that much needed shut eye can be difficult. But there are plenty of apps out there that are designed to help you get a decent amount of shut eye, and Sleep Cycle is just one of them.

While you sleep, you go through cycles of sleep states. The first state in a sleep cycle is light sleep, followed by deep sleep and a dream state referred to as REM-sleep. A full sleep cycle lasts about 90 minutes and is normally repeated several times each night.

Waking up is all about timing. The Sleep Cycle app is pretty much an extremely intelligent alarm clock. It tracks your sleep patterns and wakes you up during your lightest sleep. This means when you wake, during your lightest sleep, it feels like you’re waking up naturally rested without an alarm clock.

So how does it work? Your movements vary with each sleep phase. Sleep Cycle uses sound analysis to identify sleep states by tracking movements in bed and uses a wake up phase that ends at your desired alarm time. So it monitors signals from your body to wake you softly, when you’re at your lightest possible sleep state.

It’s available to download for both iPhone and android.
