Wellbeing | 10 Easy Ways to Love Yourself More

For a holiday that’s supposed to be about love, Valentine’s Day can completely miss the point.

Instead of celebrating love in all its forms, Valentine’s Day can put pressure on us. It can cause worry, heartache and inspire feelings of loneliness, hurt and isolation. Author and speaker Christine Arylo decided to start an international self-love movement, where the focus was on loving ourselves instead. The International Day of Self-Love was born.

Held on February 13 every year, the International Day of Self-Love offers us a chance to pause, reconnect with ourselves and realise that despite what we may think and feel, we are enough and we are more than worthy of love. A positive movement, the day aims to raise awareness of the importance of having high self-esteem and encourages women and girls to love who they are and live a positive life free of self-criticism, self-hatred and self-abuse.

Your relationship with yourself is the most important relationship in your life. If it’s been awhile since you invested some quality time in that relationship, take today as an excuse to shower yourself with love and appreciation. You’re most definitely worth it.

10 easy ways to love yourself more

1. Ditch your negative self-talk – All of us are guilty of having bad thoughts about ourselves on a daily basis. For today, pay attention to the way in which you’re talking to yourself. Every time you have a negative thought about yourself, question it and change it to a positive one. This will be hard at first but the more you do it, the easier it will get. The benefits from changing your negative self-talk into positive self-talk include a higher level of self-esteem, more self-confidence and increased levels of happiness.

2. Practice gratitude – Spend ten minutes today counting all of your blessings. Gratitude is a brilliant practice to embrace because it helps to elevate your feelings of happiness, your appreciation of life (which will encourage more self-love) and your feelings of peace. Simply write down ten things that you’re grateful for and allow yourself to feel true appreciation for all of these things.

3. Try mirror work – Louise L. Hay is a major advocate of using mirror work to change your attitude about yourself. It’s a very easy practice to try and one that can have phenomenal results. Simply stand in front of a mirror, look yourself in the eye and compliment yourself. You can declare “I love you!” or you can simply say “Your hair looks great today!” Get into the habit of saying something positive to yourself every time you see your reflection and you’ll be surprised at how quickly your attitude will change.

4. Write a love letter to yourself – Your letter can be long or short, but put pen to paper and write down everything you love about yourself. Read this letter once a week or whenever you feel a little down. It will guarantee to boost your levels of self-love.

5. Do something that’s just for yourself – Take time out of your schedule today to do something that’s just for yourself. By taking time to indulge in a hobby or some relaxation, you’ll inspire feelings of self-care and self-love. Whether it’s reading a book, taking a bath or going shopping, do something that’s just for you.

6. Let go of perfection – Perfection is a silly concept because it’s completely unattainable. Keep your expectations and goals realistic and strive for happiness rather than perfection and you’ll instantly boost your levels of self-confidence and self-love.

7. Let go of guilt – It’s impossible to be everything to everybody. Let go of any guilt you feel and remind yourself that you are always doing the best you can in any given more. Guilt can fester and turn into negative self-talk. Instead go easy on yourself – this will inspire you to have self-compassion, which is the basis of self-love.

8. Go to bed early – When was the last time you got a decent night’s sleep? Tonight, turn off the TV early, cozy up in your bed and treat yourself to a full night of uninterrupted, blissful sleep. This is an easy way to show yourself kindness and self-love.

9. Do something kind for someone else – Kindness breeds positive feelings and will make you instantly feel better about yourself. Whether it’s buying a coffee for a friend or putting some money in a charity box, a small gesture can pay big dividends in your mood and attitude towards yourself.

10. Be true to yourself – Take a long hard look at your schedule and ask yourself ‘Do I enjoy any of the items here?’ Often we get preoccupied with things we should do rather than the things that we actually want to do. If you don’t look forward to anything on your schedule, ask yourself why and ask yourself if you can either ditch that particular thing or replace it with something that you enjoy doing. By investing time in your hobbies and true interests you’ll cultivate a positive appreciation of yourself which will lead to more happiness and joy.
