Wellbeing – How to plan a self-care day

Planning a self-care day is an incredibly worthwhile and kind thing for you to do for yourself. In fact, one day filled with self-care can leave you feeling rested, rejuvenated and with a greater sense of wellbeing.

What is self-care?
Self-care is an important concept when it comes to wellbeing. Simply put, self-care is the term used to describe activities that you practice which make you feel good and allow you to take care of yourself. The best thing about self-care is that it can be as simple or elaborate as you like and there are no rules when it comes to developing a self-care practice. As long as you enjoy what you’re doing, the sky is the limit.

How do I know if I need a self-care day?
There are usually a few tell-tale signs that you would benefit from a self-care day. For example, maybe you’re feeling more stressed out than usual, or perhaps you feel a little down. Maybe you can’t remember the last time you did something for yourself. Maybe you feel that all your time is spent making other people happy and not enough time is spent doing the things that have meaning for you. In short, if you feel like you need a self-care day, chances are you’re right and you do.

So how can I organise a self-care day?
It’s incredibly simple. Just follow the steps below.

  1. Schedule it in – Have a look at your calendar or diary and work out when would be the best time for you to schedule this in. Choose a time when you can be by yourself. Your self-care day should be all about you and you shouldn’t share it with anyone (unless that’s what feels good to you).
  2. Make a list of activities for your self-care day – The sole purpose of your self-care day is to engage in activities which make you feel good or that you enjoy. Focus on what feels good. What would an ideal day look like for you? Would you like to sleep in or get up early? Would you like to take yourself out for breakfast or cook something delicious at home? Would you like to spend an hour reading? What about taking a decadent bath? Maybe you’d like to go for a walk on the beach or meet a friend for coffee?
  3. Keep your day sacred – Going forward in the lead up to your self-care day, keep it as sacred as possible. What we mean by this is don’t allow errands or other people to encroach on the time that you have set aside for yourself. Your day is yours and it’s okay to say no to the demands of others.

How often should I have a self-care day?
This very much depends on how you feel. If you like the thoughts of having one day a month that’s dedicated just to you, then that’s perfect. Other people may prefer to do it once a week or once every quarter. There are no rules and whatever you choose for yourself is perfect.

If you want to take the idea further, an even better way to practice self-care is to incorporate it into your life on a daily basis. Every day try to incorporate three small things into your life that are just for you. These things don’t have to take a lot of time or cost anything, but they are there to help boost your wellbeing. They could be as simple as reading a few chapters from a book before bed or stopping to enjoy your morning coffee without any distractions. The possibilities are endless.
