Ask the expert: blemish-prone skin

From Laura Dowling, Avène pharmacy advisor

What constitutes blemish-prone skin?

Blemish-prone skin is combination to oily skin which may have blackheads, whiteheads. papules or pustules. There are varying degrees of blemish prone skin - some people may only have mild symptoms whereas others will have moderate to severe.

What causes it?

Blemishes can be caused by many factors - hormones and hormonal change (puberty, pregnancy, menopause), stress, diet (too much sugar), or an inefficient skincare routine.

What’s the most important product to use?

A product that is kind to the skin. Many people think that because blemish-prone skin can look red and angry that they must use harsh products. The opposite is true! A product suitable for sensitive skin with a good mattifying active ingredient, such as Avène Cleanance Comedomed (€22.99), is ideal.

What product formulations can be beneficial?

Soap-free cleansers that will clear excess sebum without stripping the skin, mattifying emulsions or lotions to keep the skin as oil free as possible, and products with an active ingredient in it to help prevent the blemish occurring in the first place.

Are there products/ingredients that aren’t recommended for blemish-prone skin?

Oily products will block pores and exacerbate blemish prone skin. This is particularly important when we are using SPF. SPF can block pores so it is important to use one that is specific for oily skin such as the Avène Cleanance SPFs (from €19.99). They have even just launched a tinted version to help even out the complexion.

At what point should someone seek advice?

If someone is worried about their blemish-prone skin they should pop into their local pharmacy for advice. Pharmacists can advise people on a correct and easy skin care routine using minimal products - there is no need to spend a fortune. If the use of OTC products does not get the desired results within about 2-3 months then you can see your GP and perhaps get a prescription. There are a number of treatments out there and they have excellent results. I would encourage anyone to not suffer in silence and to always ask for advice.
