10 ways to entertain yourself at home
Are you starting to go stir-crazy thanks to social distancing? You’re not alone. If you’re feeling a bit restless, here are some simple ideas to help you stay entertained at home.
1. BINGE WATCH A BRILLIANT TV SERIES – Whether it’s on Netflix, Hulu or a different platform, there’s so much great TV out there at the moment. We highly recommend all seasons of This Is Us on Amazon Prime (but be warned, you will need tissues because you will ugly cry at every episode) or, if you’re in the form for some laughs, try New Girl or Brooklyn 99 on Netflix. If you don’t have a streaming platform, we highly recommend All 4, the on-demand channel from Channel 4 – here you’ll be able to dig in to every season of medical drama ER (we love you Doctor Doug!).
2. READ A BOOK FROM START TO FINISH – There’s never been a better time to treat yourself to a new book or to return to reading if you’ve been taking a break. Titles we’ve loved lately? Normal People by Sally Rooney (follow this by binge watching the series on RTE!) and Good Omens by Neil Gaiman and the late Terry Pratchett (again, binge watch the brilliant series on Amazon Prime).
3. LEARN TO WRITE A POEM – Poetry can be challenging but also very satisfying when you crack it! There’s so many different forms you can experiment with and, if you find that you enjoy it, there’s a host of poetry competitions that take place throughout the year that you can enter.
4. MAKE A VISION BOARD – Whether you believe in the Law of Attraction or not, why not collage a vision of your dream board? Sit down with some old magazines, a bit of glue, a scissors and a large sheet of paper and past images that represent what you want onto the paper. Look at it every day and imagine having those things in your life already. Then let the Universe get to work! If paper isn’t your thing, consider signing up to Pinterest where you can create your own virtual vision board.
5. DO A CROSSWORD – In Woman’s Way we love puzzles and every week we include puzzle pages for adults and children. A crossword puzzle is not only good for your brain, it’s also a relaxing way to kill some time. If you’re up for it, keep an eye out for our special Big Prize Crossword in the magazine – you could win an amazing prize.
6. MAKE A ‘USE UP’ MEAL – Go through your kitchen presses and take out any ingredients that need to be used up. Get online and see what you can make with those specific ingredients. This not only cuts down on food waste, it also encourages us to be creative in the kitchen. Team Woman’s Way did this recently and ended up making some delicious black bean brownies. Search your ingredients on BBC Good Food for some ideas to get started.
7. START AN INSTAGRAM ACCOUNT FOR YOUR PET – We already know that your dog is the goodest boy in the entire world and that your cat is an absolute superstar, but why not share their awesomeness with the world? If you need some petsagram inspiration, check out Norbet the Dog and Nala Cat. You never know, your pet could end up with their own sponsorship deal!
8. SURPRISE THE YOUNGSTERS – Surprise the younger members of your family by learning how to use one of their favourite social media apps or their favourite video game. What’s popular lately? Simply chat to them and find out what’s hot. In terms of social media TikTok is exploding and when it comes to gaming, everyone is obsessed with Animal Crossing and The Sims 4.
9. START A BLOG – Blogging is coming back in a big way and it can be a really fun way to make some new friends and become part of an online community. Try starting a blog about something you’re passionate about. Whether it’s bird watching, knitting or collecting stamps, start writing about it and it won’t be long before you’re swapping comments with others who are just as passionate about it as you. Most blog platforms are free, so check out Wordpress and Wix to get started.
10. LEARN HOW TO HAND LETTER – Slightly different to calligraphy, this is a really soothing activity that’s fun and requires very little to get started. Basically all you need is some paper and a pen. Plus, this is a skill that will come in handy when Christmas rolls around and you’re addressing those cards! The Postman’s Knock is a great website that offers free downloadable worksheets to help get you started.
