15 Reasons to Love Autumn
1/ Colour, Colour Everywhere – By far the best thing about autumn is how beautiful the outdoors becomes. Whether you’re in the city, your garden, by the sea or in the park, everything looks stunning. There’s something really magical about seeing the leaves on trees change into colours of red, orange, and yellow. No matter how old you are, walking through piles of fallen leaves always feels good.
2/ Comfort Food – There’s no need to worry about maintaining a summer body anymore so you can indulge those comfort food cravings that descend as temperatures drops. Autumn is filled with delicious seasonal foods, all impossible to resist.
3/ Crisp Air – There’s something so refreshing and uplifting about stepping outside and taking a deep breath when the air is cool and sharp.
4/ Cosy Knits – Gone is the focus on showing skin so you can relax and finally wear clothes that are snuggly and comfortable. It’s time to pile on the layers, dig out those cosy knits, warm tights, comfy boots and bobble hats.
5/ Turning Back the Clock – The clocks go back at some point in autumn – an extra hour of beauty sleep and a lazy weekend is the perfect combination.
6/ Darker Evenings – As the nights draw in there’s nothing better than closing the curtains on the world, lighting a fire and snuggling up on the sofa with a good book.
7/ New TV Shows – Autumn is the prime season for new films, television shows, dramas and TV talent competitions. What better reason to light a fire, grab a blanket and get cosy.
8/ Halloween – An excellent excuse to have a party, wear fancy dress and even ask strangers to give you sweets and chocolate. Halloween encapsulates everything magical about autumn, plus there’s apple tart, toffee apples, sparklers and fireworks.
9/ Misty Mornings – One of the perks of cooler temperatures, longer nights and increased moisture in the air are those misty, soul-soothing autumnal mornings. Make the most of them with early walks in woodland or local parks.
10/ Make-Up – Put those brights away, it’s time for more flattering rich dark hues and autumnal tones for eyes and lips. Cue dark burgundys, warm browns and bold reds. There’s always new make-up ranges launched at this time of year so it’s the perfect season to experiment and try a dark lip or a smoky eye.
11/ Pumpkins – Probably the most jolly, fun and vibrant vegetable ever. Plus they’re excellent for soups and, of course, pumpkin carving at Halloween. The beginning of autumn also marks the return of the beloved Pumpkin Spice Latte in cafes and coffee shops.
12/ Hot Chocolate – Autumn is a great time to indulge in your favourite hot drinks. Hot chocolate and autumn go hand in hand and make the perfect pairing – it’s practically against the law not to partake in a mug or two.
13/ Pyjamas – Oh how we’ve missed our snuggly onesies, pyjamas and cosy dressing gowns and slippers. Pulling on our ‘Jim Jams’ at 6pm and snuggling under a blanket on the sofa is a perfectly normal thing to do now it’s autumn.
14/ It’s Candle Season – If there’s one thing that screams autumn, it’s a good scented candle. There's something about the crisp air that makes you want to light a candle that makes the whole house smell good. Season-appropriate scents like pepper, gingerwood, nutmeg and cinnamon create a warm and cosy autumnal atmosphere.
15/ Conkers – Conkers are the glossy brown seeds of the horse chestnut tree. They grow in green spiky cases and fall to the ground in autumn. Although you can’t eat them (and they are poisonous to pets), children (and adults) love playing ‘conkers’ – one of the oldest games around. Make a hole through the centre, thread a piece of string or a shoelace through it and tie one end (so that the string doesn’t slip out again). Then two players take it in turns to hit each other's conker. Whoever splits their opponent’s conker first, wins.
