Jean-ius!
Shopping for jeans is a minefield these days. Between girlfriend, boyfriend and mom shapes, never mind wide, flare, skinny and straight leg, it’s not for the faint hearted. However, we’re here to help with our easy to understand guide to all things jean-related, along with tips on choosing the right cut for your body shape.
Bootcut
This option flares out slightly at the ankle and, like straight leg, can work for any body type. As the name suggests, they look good… with boots. These keep coming back into style as they offer pretty much a universal silhouette.

Wide leg
Cut wide throughout the leg, offering a triangular shape (as the flare is gradual). Wide legs tend to accentuate the smallest part of the waist and look sophisticated.

Flare leg
This option flares out beyond the knees and the flare can range from subtle to something that is intended to catch another’s eye. Especially flattering on those with narrow hips or a broader top half. Remember that flares, by their nature, run long look for the inseam that’s right for you.

Straight leg
Offers a straight up and down fit for wearers and can be on the loose side like boyfriend jeans or fitted like slim-fit jeans. It’s a classic style that is perfect for any body type and can work for many occasions. We love a straight leg with a ballet pump or a sandal (when the weather is warmer).

Slim leg
Consider this as a combination of skinny jean and straight leg jeans. These are sculpted to the thighs and hips while skimming the ankle – it’s a slim look but won’t feel too clingy. Comfort is important! If you love them but don’t think they love you, opt for darker washes. Play with volume on your top half to create balance.

Skinny leg
Cut to be tight fitting throughout the leg, from the thigh to the ankle. Usually, skinny jeans are made from stretch denim meaning (in theory) they’re able to be removed and put on easily.

Boyfriend jean
Offer a baggier, looser cut but have a snug fit around the waist. These look great with a blazer and heels but just as cool with trainers and a T-shirt. Opt for fitted tops with a looser fit jean and look for denim with lots of stretch for that laidback look.

Girlfriend jean
Unlike the boyfriend jean, these don’t sit as low on the waist and are more tapered in the leg. Becoming more popular in recent years, they work for casual daytime or dressed up for a night out (you know, when we ever go out again).

Mom jean
Also known as high res jeans, these will sit at your natural waist and will highlight your bottom. Typified by women in the 1980s, these work well for those with shorter legs (who can benefit from the high-waisted cut).
