I am fond of saying that I was raised by a great feminist… and my mother was amazing too. He sent all of his daughters and sons out into the world believing they could achieve anything. A day to celebrate dads is a great reminder of the special role they play in our lives. There is nothing that compares with the inexplicable comfort of a father’s presence. That reassuring hand on your shoulder, the uncharacteristic hug, just when you need it, and that small nod of encouragement that speaks more loudly than words. There are no dads to celebrate or to buy presents for in my house, both Dara and I lost our’s too soon. But that doesn’t mean we don’t remember them warmly on that day and celebrate how wonderful it was to have a great dad. Like Richard (my late husband), my dad Harry was a man before his time. He cooked and cleaned, read to us at night, was with us during all our precious moments growing up. He was a great role model for all of us Casey children on what it means to be a dad and the power and strength of that unique and loving relationship that lasts a lifetime - even when they have left us. So although we won’t be in the queue for jumpers and socks to hand over on June 20, like all who no longer have (or who have never had) a dad around, we dearly wish we were.
