Over 40s Fashion

Models flock to the runway in micro-minis, platform heels larger than life and some of the quirkiest sunglasses you’ll ever come across. Style, however, is never limited by something as trivial as age (shout out to Iris Apfel, Maye Musk and Carmen Dell'Orefice).

Here are 6 of this season’s fashion and accessory trends tailored for women over 40…

Gingham

Gingham was plastered all over catwalks earlier this year with Michael Kors and Carolina Herrera taking the ‘little house on the prairie’ vibe and turning it into something more sophisticated. You don't need to be gaga for gingham to wear this trending pattern either. Try accessories instead - a gingham headscarf, shoulder bag or belt will be a stylish addition to your wardrobe.

Draped Poncho Styles

The draped poncho-style can be effortlessly classic when worn right and we’re delighted to see it grace the runway once again. The versatility of an elegantly draped cape is endless - wear over jeans, style with a skirt or dress and of course, it’s a fantastic transitional piece to own coming into spring when the weather may still be chilly.

Dresses over Trousers

The 00’s trend we thought was gone for good has returned except this time it has a new look. We no longer pair gauzy long dresses with lowrise flared denim and flip flops (thank God). Instead, designers such as Jill Sanders and Proenza Schouler curated tasteful collections which included the dress and pants ensemble, focusing on silk and satin shirt dresses paired with high-waisted wide-leg trousers for a more sophisticated look.

Oversized Blazers

An oversized blazer will never go out of fashion - at least not for long anyway. It’s a style that everyone can wear that will look both flattering and cool. You can dress up your outfit by adding heels and a chunky belt to the blazer or dress it down by pairing it with a white tee, your favourite jeans and a pair of comfy trainers. This is the year of anti-tailoring after all.

Lace-Up Sandals

Lace-up sandals offer the perfect balance of edgy and glam. They look great with jeans but they work just as well with your favourite summer dresses whether they’re flats or have a chunky block heel. And because they’re so versatile, lace-up sandals are great to bring on your holidays.WW

Tote Bag

The tote bag is a trend that we hold dear to our hearts. A bag that relentlessly swallows keys, spare change and lipgloss has never been more appreciated. People are throwing everything but the kitchen sink into their totes before leaving the house - spare flats, first aid kits, stockpiled hand sanitiser. It’s a bag that can do no wrong. The bigger the better is the motto for 2022.
