The Last Rose Of Summer
The beauty of roses enhance my home, inside and out, writes Norah Casey. Artist Sasha Sykes created a white rose table (the flowers from my wedding bouquet) a few years ago along with a beautiful console table with red rose petals embedded in resin. Roses have a special significance for Ireland. The Last Rose of Summer written by the Irish poet Thomas Moore, has remained globally popular since it was written in 1805. And for WB Yeats, who references the enduring and fleeting beauty of the rose in his writings, the flower also symbolised women and Ireland. Roses are emblems of love, loss, valour and indulgence.
It was rumoured that a carpet of rose petals in Cleopatra’s chamber perfumed the air as Marc Antony’s footsteps approached her bed. A sprinkling of this beautiful aromatic flower will lift the mood as we savour these last roses of summer. Roses are equally expressive on runways and hallways with minimalist and romantic color palettes in interiors and designs. Roses are rooted in optimism and growth and remind us of the seasonal transition to shorter days and the hope of their return the following year. Colours are calm with serene pinks, green and blue tones that nod to the fading blooms.
